What is a triathlon?
A triathlon is a multisport race format that consists of swimming, biking, and running in a consecutive order, designed to test the endurance of its participants. The participants, also known as triathletes, compete for the fastest overall completion time (including the “transition” times between each event).
Much like a road race, such as a 10K run or 40K bike ride, participants are divided into groups based on their sex and age. Additionally, triathlons have their own set of unique rules, providing a level playing field for all participants. While each of the disciplines (swimming, biking, running) has their own set of rules, some are universal to all three. If any rules are violated, it will result in costly time penalties, ranging from one to 12 minutes, depending on the severity and the length of the race. Triathlons in the United States are sanctioned by USA Triathlon, the National Governing Body. A copy of the USAT Rules can be found here.
To accommodate the many different skill levels, there are several distances for triathlon races. There are four common triathlon distances, which include:
- Sprint Distance
- Olympic Distance
- Half Ironman, also known as 70.3
- Full Ironman, also known as 140.6
Why participate in a triathlon?
If you want serious endurance training, participating in a triathlon is perfect for you. A triathlon is great for both men and women who want more variety from their workouts, a workout program with a serious goal to strive for, or for those suffering from joint pain or overuse injuries from marathon running.
Although the reasons people participate in a triathlon differ, the benefits are universal. It is one of the most rewarding things you will ever do in your life, not just physically, but mentally, socially and spiritually.
Here are just a few of the benefits:
- Weight loss
- More Energetic
- Revitalized Focus
- Improved overall health
- Handle stress more effectively
- Gain self-confidence
- Improve overall mood
- Increased sense of purpose in your life
